I had never heard of A+F Hedges before Jan. 2021. I own the original mid-1990's Woods, and have had a hard time finding a cologne of its equal. Literally, it's the perfect man's cologne to me. I know, how could that be with Chanel, Creed, even Eau Sauvage. But for me, this is the quintessential outdoor, rugged, smooth guys's scent. The original Woods is perfect.
And then I met Hedges. I came across the name while looking for original Woods online. Hard to find, just like the original Polo Green of the 1980's. You know, the one that has all the bad stuff in it that is now illegal in 800 countries.
I read that some guy's old Dad loved Hedges way back when. So I looked into it. No review here on Basenotes, which was very surprising to me. After some decision making, I purchased a used bottle. And boy howdy, am I happy I spent that $65 USD.
The bottle is a splash bottle. Green, with a gold top. On the bottom it says 4oz cologne, made in the USA. On the front is A+F, and toward the bottom half it says Hedges. I believe this is, minimally, from the 1990's, maybe earlier.
The scent itself is divine, if you can get past the whole mallrat persona of A+F, and hearken back to the days of Hemingway. To me, this smells exactly like a toned down version of the 1980's Polo green, with a beautiful splash of the original Woods in it. When I smell the original Polo green, and compare this, they are very very similar. Then when you sniff the Woods, it's exactly the combination you can picture.
So not to gush over this, because I cannot say it's better than Polo green or Woods or Eau Sauvage. It's just a fantastic manly, woodsy scent with loads of greens, musk, hunting and scotch around a fireplace. If you enjoy any of the aforementioned two colognes, I highly recommend you find yourself a bottle of this and sit back, enjoy.
