DOUSSAN (Bourbon French)

Bergamot, Vanilla, Patchouli, Leather, Oud

In 1843, August Doussan arrived in New Orleans, fresh from France, to become the city's first perfumer. His company, opened on the Vieux Carre, to later become the Bourbon French Company. Their scent, Doussan, is named after their founder, and seems to be their newest men's scent as it is not yet listed in Fragrantica and contains the relatively recent note of oud in its composition.

I usually loathe any scent that contains oud with few exceptions (Laurent Dumont's Black Oud being one of them). This is another exception. The overall blending is excellent and the result is a subtle, soft, warm, rich leather scent that is most attractive and in keeping with the sort of classic men's creations of the past (Knize Ten, Tricorn) that are associated with leather and sandalwood. I am surprised that sandalwood is not listed as a note since its warm presence is suggested to my nose. The oud here is just detectable in the dry down and is sparingly used.

A fine men's leather and a just tribute to BF's founder. At the prices of its many product incarnations, it is quite a reasonable purchase and worth investigation by Basenotes' readers.
