Green Madness is more green than mad—I could actually have gone for a bit more forest shadows, rustling pine needles, and bitter burning incense noted in Zworykina's description. Instead, the sunlight through the trees and "triumphant melody" of bright grassy notes win out. While not so exuberant as Golden Lavender, neither is it so far removed: a fougère cousin to that glowing chypre.

This is hardly real disappointment, though, as—setting aside the earthier aspects of Zworykina's description—Green Madness is quite beautiful on its own terms. And, who knows? Perhaps wearing it midsummer, as Zworykina recommends, would bring out more of its smoky and bitter side. I look forward to finding out.

"When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams -- this may be madness; to seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness! And maddest of all -- to see life as it is and not as it should be!"
