In Indie Perfume Brand Spotlight, we question different brands to find out more about their brand and the people behind it. This time we question Nina Lamaison about her eponymous brand.
About you
Tell us who you are.
My name is Nina Lamaison, with Nina being my pseudonym and Lamaison my maternal surname.
How did you get into the perfume industry?
I came into this world out of dissatisfaction and therapy. Dissatisfaction because I had a brand of aromatic products whose scents didn’t quite fulfil my desires, and one day I presented myself at the laboratory that made them in search of what I needed.
Not finding it, the question arose: Why don’t you make them yourself? And here I am. It was very difficult for me because there was no place in my country where I could study this. I trained with private company personnel. In various places where I went knocking on doors, they would open them, but just a crack.
Curiosity, stubbornness, perseverance, and a lot of money allowed me to learn.
After crying a lot because the lack of access to materials frustrated me, I dared to create for others (at first, they were environmental) and then I ventured into perfume branding.
And so, I made my place in the industry in my country, always working independently. Nowadays, I have 25 perfumes with my signature and 7 from my private collection.
What was the first perfume you ever purchased?
I never bought a perfume. My fascination with this world begins from another place: when I say therapy, it’s because in 2015, while I had my environmental brand, my father passed away, and my search was not for a nice smell but for calm for my soul.
This dissatisfaction fuelled a search aimed at healing my grief, leading me to craft fragrances that tell stories, evoke emotions, and guide through narratives.
My first creation, a “vintage amber,” was a personal endeavour to reconnect with my father’s memory. It remains a cherished possession.
What is your favourite meal?
My favourite food is Tucuman empanadas, well known for having won awards – a source of pride as I am from there
Where is your favourite place?
I haven’t found it yet. Currently, I live inside my laboratory, and when I’m there, I feel complete calm. But something more playful, not yet.
Do you have an interesting party trick or any hidden talents?
Talent? Hmm, I don’t think so. Haha. I do good lymphatic drainage (I studied physiotherapy before this), I really like everything related to health. But a fun trick, no. Oh, how boring!
Who would play you in a film of your life?
I think if there’s an actress who could represent me (physically and behaviourally speaking), it would be Lupita Ferrer, a Mexican actress from the 90s. She used a lot of gestures and drama in her acts. Haha.
About your Brand
Describe your brand in one sentence.
My brand uses the phrase: ART ON YOUR SKIN. It’s how I conceive perfumery. A mixture of cinema and scents. A synesthetic fusion, undeniably linked to my creative process.
Where does the name of your brand come from?
My brand is my pseudonym
Who are your perfumes for?
My perfumes are aimed at a selective audience who have gone through the Designer and Commercial experience. Someone who seeks to experience the fragrance and not just apply it. Someone who uses perfumes as a BIG DRESSING ROOM IN A THEATER (today I wear the character I want and live the story of that character).
Tell us about your latest perfume.
My latest perfume is Status Quo, to be launched in June 2024. It’s a manifestation of transition. It wants to represent the known that I live today and the new that is yet to come. I am preparing myself for what the universe has in store for me. It’s the boldest of all. My collection is called INTIMATE (there are eight works that show my sensations and emotions at different stages).
If someone wanted to try your fragrances, which one would you recommend they try first and why?
First, it would be nice for you to try Maffia. This fragrance was selected as a finalist in the Mouillette d’Argent competition this year. We’ll see what happens. And I say Maffia and not Euphoria, which won the prize in the same competition last year because it has a more “femme” DNA, and not everyone sees aromas as genderless as I do.
What challenges do you want to overcome for your brand?
I would like the world to know my perfumes, and I WOULD LOVE to work someday with Monegal and Carbonnel. Those are my ideal goals, right? Haha. But someday I will. I’m sure of it.
What is unique about your brand?
What’s special about my brand is that in each bottle, there’s soul, heart, and life.
