As part of the Basenotes Community Fragrance Project, where CPL Aroma’s are going to create a fragrance based on the ideas of the Basenotes Community, we are featuring interviews with the three perfumers who will be creating our fragrances for us. Second to be interviewed is Beverley Bayne, who is a Senior Perfumer.
Hello Beverley, how did you get into perfumery?Completely by accident! I wanted to work in a laboratory, and I was lucky enough to find a job in a fragrance laboratory. A year later I started training as a perfumer. One of my favourite things about being a perfumer is that you are always learning something new – that’s such an important part of the job for me – you just don’t stop learning. What are the challenges?Legislation is our biggest challenge at the moment. It’s becoming very complex. If you had no brief, what type of fragrance would you create?I love all the deep, rich, woody notes and I’d like to do something based around these notes – and the naturals, which are becoming harder to use due to certain points of legislation. I’d also like to be able to use the Nitro Musks again and a really good true bergamot oil.Are there any fragrances you wish you had created.Yes, Chanel 19 – great use of orris, woods and mosses – and also Coco Chanel. More recently, still on the Chanel theme, I think Coco Mademoiselle is a wonderful fragrance. How do you feel about creating a fragrance for Basenoters?Yes, it’s going to be totally unique and we’ll be able to do something really creative and not worry too much about costs and constraints, so it will be very interesting.
