Frederic Malle’s long awaited collaboration with Swedish fashion brand, Acne Studios, hits the stores today. The scent is inspired by the comfort of the smell of fabric softener.
“Many classic rose and violet perfumes are influential to fabric softeners,” Malle told Wallpaper magazine. ‘And we liked the idea of taking some elements from that, which feels comforting yet a bit utilitarian. There’s a modern sweetness to it that has never been used in a classical aldehydic shape.”
Malle worked with upcoming perfumer, Suzy Le Helley on the fragrance. Malle says, “Edition de Parfum came from the frustration of perfumes that were not having the freedom to create whatever they wanted. I am still told by perfumers, who the future talents are. And when the idea of working with Acne Studios came, I realised that the same name kept on coming back. This is how Suzy came along.”
Helley adds, “Everyone knows the smell of fabric softener. It rings a little bell in the brain of everyone. And during the process I always keep in mind how to create this little song into something more luxurious.“
Acne Studios is a Swedish fashion house renowned for its contemporary and minimalist designs. Established in 1996 by Jonny Johansson, initially as a denim brand, Acne Studios has since expanded its offerings to encompass ready-to-wear clothing, footwear, accessories, furniture, and now, perfume.
Malle describes how the collaboration came about.
“I was a secret admirer of Acne [Studios], and I decided to write a letter to Jonny [Johansson, founder of Acne], and to my amazement, Jonny knew who I was and was wearing my perfume! So we were both, sort of, silently admiring each other.
We discovered that we have many things in common. This way of seeing creation, which is really not compromising… And if I hadn’t written, we would’ve kept on having parallel lives.”
