Hello,
I need your help to make my own synthetic musk. That musk which comes in a thick sticky viscous form. It is famous in the middle east and it is applied on the skin to give you a fresh clean long lasting scent.

As per I read it is just a crystal synthetic musk like xylene or musk ambrette or musk ketone that is dissolved in 95% ethanol but I need to hear from trusted sources.

Thick sticky viscous musk with a fresh long lasting scent is galaxolide. It isn't crystalline, though - it's thick, sticky, and viscous. ;p

Those crystalline musks will be liquid when diluted - they don't dilute down to a thick viscous material... It most likely involved resins also like benzoin etc.

Interesting!
I thought ethanol can melt down the solid synthetic musk to thick sticky liquid.
I will read more about galaxolide musk.
Thank you for the informative answers.

Oh you misunderstood me - ethanol CAN dissolve those musks - but the result will be like clear water, not a thick sticky liquid.

Yes I got it jfrater. I understood the idea. I got that ethanol (I think benzyl benzoate also) is alcohol and it cannot convert musk ketone to viscous liquid but will convert it as water like liquid.
I need to learn how to make galaxolide musk by myself to control the smell as per my preferences to add for example mandarin or pomegranate flavors.

If any one has idea to teach me I will appreciate that.

There is no practical way that you as individual can MAKE (synthesize) galaxolide. You can dilute it and mix it with other scents, but unless you are a chemist in an equipped lab, making it is out of the question. And even if you were, it would still be wildly impractical.

You take the musks that are commercially available and blend them to achieve the desired odor profile.

if u want to make your own synthetic musk, if i understood (produce it). then u need special equipment. in middle eastern clean fresh musk is popular??? just so i can be clarified, i always thought middle eastern love animalic musks and or course oud.

Ok, it seems more complex than I thought.

I searched through the internet and I found suppliers selling galaxolide musk but 70% purity is the maximum I have got.
Is 70% purity perfect to make long lasting musk note. I am planning to mix it with Bulgarian rose oil and sweet orange to come out with orange flavored musk or rose flavored musk (Bulgarian rose oil has citrus note). I need to age it for 40 days to see the result.

@perfumer86,
In middle east this musk is really demanded and people like it much because the weather is always hot and such musk is hard to fade out by the high temperatures.
Amber and agarwood (especially Asami one which comes from Indian oud trees) are also famous as well as Cevite musk but not preferred by all people like this synthetic musk which is preferred by ladies men and even children. Who does not like soapy fresh flowery woody smell :)

Galaxolide is diluted to allow use in compounding, because it is very thick when pure. But pure is available... I have a bottle here.

What purity you have. I did not find more than 70% purity in the market

Why are you focused on obtaining 100% galaxolide? There is absolutely no functional relevance to your perfume composition if you use 70% or 50% galaxolide diluted in an odorless solvent. However much galaxolide itself you want in your composition, simply use a proportionately greater quantity of the diluted material.

There is also no proof that what is described as "That musk which comes in a thick sticky viscous form. It is famous in the middle east" is even Galaxolide at all. It could be some other musk or mix of musks in some other viscous base.

Adding to this: I highly doubt that middle easterners with their love of intense and wonderfully rich scents would be particularly thrilled at a bottle of galaxolide hah.

I am wondering, are you hoping to make something like Musk Tahara?
I know this topic has come up either here or on the Perfumemaking FB group before.
I have no experience with it, but from memory and a quick internet search it seems that would be the type of product you are trying to make.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

From the description of the scent profile it does seem to be a clean white musk with some floral notes, maybe sandalwood etc.

Hello,
I need your help to make my own synthetic musk.

You have a proper chemical lab at home?
Galaxolide® can be synthesized from tert-amylene by reaction with alpha-methylstyrene, to obtain 1,1,2,3,3-pentamethylindane. This intermediate molecule can be hydroxyalkylated by reaction with the propylene oxide, during a Friedel and Craft reaction, catalysed by aluminum chloride, for example. The alcohol function of the second intermediate product obtained during the previous process can be cyclized by reaction with formaldehyde, either in an alcoholic medium or with an acid anhydride, to obtain the final compound, Galaxolide®.

I think its much easier you just buy the galaxolide.

Many Middle Eastern musk oils are diluted in carriers like DPG or often are thickened with materials like Hercolyn-D. That is what makes them thick & sticky, not necessarily the type of musk aromachemicals they use
