It Was A Time smells to me mostly like a burnt caramel patchouli, snazzed up with a whole headshop's worth of smells: smoke, herbs, and a tangled web of essential oils. I think a lot of the added complexity comes from immortelle, with it's leafy green curry and maple syrup smell.

It would absolutely never have occurred to me that this was supposed to be "marine" or evoke the ocean, despite the description. But as a patchouli gourmand, this does well, in part because it smells fairly natural instead of being just another Angel clone. That being said, the way that this smells kind of essential oil-ish does give it a slightly amateur feel that some may find cheapens it, while other may find endearing.
