A knockout at a budget-friendly price – Oriental Edition II is like the love child of Oud Satin Mood and Black Aoud, presenting an extremely seductive gourmand woody rose which somehow manages to avoid much of the brashness of this family. It has an essential, almost parental, softness about it which does the trick. That being said, it is no shrinking violet. The rose is deep and dark, red turning to black, the woods powerful but not harsh, infused with the slightly boozy warmth of patchouli, and the gourmand sweetness is silky – not the usual burnt sugar effects. The notes list this gourmand aspect as ‘praline' – not quite, and I'm glad because anything chocolatey or nutty wouldn't have sat well here. It's a fantasy candy accord that threads in and out of the amber aspects of this fragrance making the whole thing pulse. Rich, decadent but oh so wearable – close your eyes and this could have knocked you back for 200 bucks rather than the beer money it retails at.
