Neuffer's Tabac Santal is a tobacco chypre cooled by orris and lavender—which is darned close to some initial thoughts I had about designing a custom fragrance. It starts out focusing on the dry, aromatic aspects of tobacco leaf and a woody sandalwood-cedar, so dusty as to be almost flat, but Tabac Santal rewards one's patience as the spices, florals, and chypre essentials gently assert their presence and round things out. This doesn't have monster sillage, so if you're looking for a club scent or to otherwise announce your arrival in advance, Tabac Santal is not for you.

But I'm pretty sure it's for me. And now I have to come up with a more original idea for my custom scent.
